A "Walk Through" of a Person's Very first Skydive

There is absolutely nothing as exhilarating as skydiving, making many first time skydivers want to try it again. Skydiving is one of the only times when you can experience something akin to human flight, experiencing a sense of unparalleled freedom. Many people would love to skydive but hold back as they feel the sport is a high-risk activity. However, The United States Parachuting Association has logged the dives of more than 350,000 people who have completed more than 3 million jumps a year - there is a greater assumed danger associated when driving, particularly when compared with skydiving.

Why is Tandem Skydiving Recommended?

It ensures safety. To fly alone, you will need to complete a multilevel course that will require hundreds of hours of preparation. This doesn't include passing a written test and showcasing an aptitude for skydiving. For individuals looking to skydive just for entertainment, a tandem skydive is ideal as it is less demanding. After a short training session, you will be strapped to an experienced tandem instructor for an experience of a lifetime.

First Time Tandem Skydive

During a tandem skydiving session also referred to as tandem parachuting, a licensed instructor is securely strapped to your back and will assist you as you exit the plane and enter into the exciting freefall moment up to the time you touch down. In a tandem skydive, 80% of the work is done by your instructors and gravity does the rest, giving you less obligation so that you take in the breathtaking views and enjoy your first skydiving experience. In most states, the student needs to be at least 18 years of age or older for a tandem session.

A tandem skydive experience allows you to free fall at 120mph in about a minute. It only requires a brief ground lesson where your instructor will guide you on how to exit the aircraft, proper body positions, canopy control and good landing positions. You will also learn how you can deploy the actual parachute, although it will not be necessary for you to do so during the actual skydiving activity.

Experiencing a little bit of nausea before and during the session is typical. If nausea does occur, it's likely due to the nerves or the slow and swaying part of the canopy glide. People in the upper range of skydiving weight limitations are at particular risk of feeling sick. However, this feeling quickly dissipates after landing.

To have a safe and worry-free experience, you will be working with certain pieces of equipment in each of the jumps. Usually, a drogue is used instantly after exiting the airplane to stabilize terminal velocity. This also slows down the descent, lengthening the experience. The primary parachute is connected to a reserve parachute. Modern tandem skydiving equipment is also accompanied with an automatic activation device, which will automatically deploy if it senses that the diver and/or instructor is freefalling below a specific altitude.

Skydiving Instructor's Credentials

A skydiving professional instructor needs to belong to USPA and log at least 500 jumps and 3 hours of freefall. He is familiar with every element of skydiving, every piece of equipment and tools.

Recommendations for Your First Tandem Skydiving Experience

  • Since you will be spending several hours in your drop zone, take the time to acquaint yourself with the place. Request a briefing and get to ask any questions you might have in your mind so that you have an idea of what to expect in the first skydive. Also, remember to bring a snack or light meal just before you head out to the drop zone.
  • Don't be afraid to take a small dosage of dramamine, or an over-the-counter medication for nausea, a couple of hours before flying.
  • You will be provided and fitted with multiple pieces of safety equipment, including a jumpsuit and a safety helmet.

The Thrill of Skydiving

Once you are through with the briefing session, you will be harnessed to your instructor and get to enjoy a plane ride prior to jumping out the plane with help from your instructor. Typically, your instructor will have a countdown before launching himself and you out of the airplane. Breathing should be easy in free fall. Just make sure to take a breath through your mouth, and indulge in the views via the safety of your protection goggles.
